Day 1 – Amsterdam – The Train Lodge

The Train Lodge is a unique hostel in Amsterdam and offers cozy berths in shared or private compartments. The original train carriages were part of the Zürich – Rome night train. Conveniently located near the Sloterdijk station, it’s a great destination for lodging.

The Train Lodge is so close to the Sloterdijk station that if I just had looked up instead of having my face buried in my phone, it would have been obvious. Hey, it was dark outside and I had a little bit of anxiety of being in a new country.

This is my first hostel I’ve ever stayed in and I wanted something more chill than a party hostel in Centraal Amsterdam.

Manuel from Switzerland

That evening I met Manuel, my bunk mate for that evening. He had ridden his grandmother’s three-speed (with one gear working) bike 1000 km from Switzerland to Amsterdam. To power his cellphone, he carried a car battery.

We ended up hanging out in the bistro area of the Train Lodge and drinking Grolsch beers until 2:00 am.

Thinking it’s best not to disturb the rest of our bunk mates, we tip-toed into our room and found it empty! Everyone was still out partying. Had a good laugh about that!

About 30 minutes later, Kelly stumbled in from Amsterdam Centraal and started talking about all her adventures that evening.

Finally, we are all settled in for the evening (or technically the following morning at this point!).

I am half asleep and then our fourth bunk mates enters the room, tries climbing up the ladder to his third level bunk bed and falls down on the floor. He apologizes profusely and I say no problem and ask if he’s is okay. He mumbles something and then proceeds back up the ladder.

Finally some sleep after a very long, but very exciting day!
